Honoring the Fallen of September 11th: Mercer Transportation’s Commitment

In the quiet of Louisville, at the heart of the September 11th Tribute at the Louisville Fire Department Headquarters, a piece of history stood solemnly—a steel beam from the World Trade Center, now a part of Mercer Transportation’s Bill Howard Park. This year, as in many years before, this steel was lent from our memorial to the Louisville Fire Department, where it became the centerpiece of a tribute honoring the lives lost on that fateful day in 2001. The ceremony, attended by Governor Andy Beshear and Mayor Craig Greenberg, was a poignant reminder of the resilience of our nation and the enduring strength of our community.

After the tribute, marked by a moment of silence, the beam was returned to its permanent home at Mercer’s Bill Howard Memorial Park, where it serves as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many.

Mercer’s Involvement in the Wake of September 11th

Mercer’s piece of steel from the World Trade Center

For those new to Mercer, our connection to the events of September 11th runs deep. In the years following the attacks, Mercer’s drivers volunteered their time and equipment to transport pieces of the World Trade Center that had been stored in Maryland for research back to New York City. This significant operation took place in September 2009, when 25 of our trucks formed a convoy to move the steel beams to Hangar 17 at JFK Airport.

The convoy, escorted by police and cheered on by communities along the route, was a powerful symbol of unity and respect. Roads were closed, including the top tier of the George Washington Bridge, to allow for the passage of these historic artifacts. The sight of first graders waving flags and firefighters standing on top of their engine, saluting the convoy, are moments that will forever be etched in our memories.

Securing a Memorial for Mercer

Following this significant contribution, our team at Mercer, led by Libby Netherton, took steps to secure a piece of steel for our own memorial. After reaching out to the appropriate channels, we were awarded a beam, which was transported to Louisville in February 2011. This piece now stands proudly in Bill Howard Memorial Park, serving as a tribute to the victims, first responders, and military personnel who gave their lives on September 11th.

A Lasting Tribute

Mercer Transportation’s commitment to honoring the memory of 9/11 victims and survivors has not waned over the years. Our steel beam has been shared with various memorials, most recently displayed at the Veterans Memorial Park of Kentucky. Each year, the park hosts a solemn ceremony in the days leading up to September 11th, ensuring that the legacy of those who perished and those who bravely responded is never forgotten.

At Mercer, we have always stood in full support of America’s first responders and military. Their bravery and sacrifice are the bedrock of our nation’s strength, and we are proud to play a part in preserving their legacy.
