Pumpkins, Creativity, and Community: Mercer Carves Out Some Festive Fun

Mercer Transportation Louisville Campus with Pumpkins
Mercer’s community comes together annually to have fun carve pumpkins together.

In fall of 2024, the Mercer Transportation staff rolled up their sleeves, picked out their pumpkins, and got to carving! Our annual pumpkin carving event brought out the creativity and festive spirit that makes our community truly special. From spooky faces to silly grins to stunning works of art, every pumpkin was a reflection of the unique personalities that fill our halls.

While the event itself was filled with laughter and friendly competition, the roots of this tradition go way back. The practice of carving lanterns began in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, where people once carved turnips and other root vegetables to ward off evil spirits. The legend of “Stingy Jack,” a wandering soul with only a carved-out turnip and an ember to light his way, eventually made its way to America—where pumpkins became the gourd of choice, thanks to their size and availability. This old-world tradition came to life in the most colorful way right here at Mercer.

What made the 2024 pumpkin carving day so special wasn’t just the designs or the decorations—it was the people. Mercer has always believed in the power of creativity and community. That’s why, year-round, we make space for our team to come together and express themselves. From painting and planting flowers in the spring, to decorating Christmas trees during the holidays, we offer a variety of opportunities for our staff to unwind and connect through creativity.

We’re incredibly grateful to have such an engaged and enthusiastic team. Events like these don’t just happen—they’re made special by the people who show up and pour their energy into them. To everyone who participated in our 2024 pumpkin carving event: thank you. Your talent and team spirit helped keep our Mercer culture strong, vibrant, and a little more orange this fall.

We can’t wait to see what you’ll carve up next year. 🎃
