Open Roads, Open Conversations: How Mercer Brings Drivers and Leadership Together

At Mercer Transportation, open communication isn’t treated like a formality. It’s something we practice, refine, and prioritize in real time. Each year, when agents travel in from across the country to sit down with our drivers, it becomes more than a meeting. It becomes a living example of who we are.

These Q&A sessions are built on a simple idea: give drivers direct access to the people behind the decisions. No layers. No filters. Just honest conversation.

Drivers come in with questions. Sometimes they’re about processes, sometimes about policy, and sometimes about the bigger picture of where Mercer is headed. What stands out isn’t just the questions, though. It’s the answers. Clear, thoughtful, and direct.

“I didn’t expect to get a straight answer like that,” one driver shared afterward.

That kind of reaction says a lot. It speaks to a culture where transparency isn’t promised, it’s practiced.

What makes these conversations unique is the presence in the room. Agents like Brent Wooten and Jessie Booker made the trip in, bringing their experience and perspective directly to the drivers they work alongside every day. Leadership voices, including Tyler Johnston, joined in as well. And it wasn’t just one department speaking. Managers from across the company were present, listening closely and stepping in when their expertise could provide clarity.

That dynamic matters.

When a driver asks a question about operations, safety, or support, and the right person is there to answer it on the spot, it removes the guesswork. It replaces uncertainty with understanding. It shows that every part of the company is connected, and more importantly, accessible.

“I’ve never worked anywhere where the president of the company is readily available and will talk to you face-to-face without a meeting,” another driver said.

Moments like that aren’t orchestrated. They’re the result of a culture that values openness at every level.

After the first session, everyone had a chance to reset and recharge with a catered lunch. Conversations didn’t stop there. If anything, they carried on in smaller groups, in side discussions, in those in-between moments where relationships are strengthened.

The second session, led by Todd Felty, shifted the focus to safety. Drivers were reintroduced to the full safety team and brought up to speed on new federal regulations, along with any updates to Mercer’s own policies and procedures. Just like the earlier discussion, this wasn’t a one-way presentation. It was a conversation.

Drivers asked questions. The safety team responded. And when needed, additional managers stepped in to provide more context, reinforcing the idea that no question is too small and no concern goes unheard.

“I like it when the drivers come together like this,” one driver said.

That sense of unity is at the heart of it all.

For drivers who spend most of their time on the road, it can be easy to feel removed from the day-to-day activity of the office. These meetings close that distance. They create a shared space where drivers, agents, and staff can align, communicate, and move forward together.

It’s also a reminder that Mercer’s open door policy isn’t just a phrase. It’s a practice. After each session, managers remain available for one-on-one conversations, giving drivers the opportunity to speak more privately, ask deeper questions, or raise specific concerns. There’s no pressure, no hesitation, just access.

That kind of environment doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built over time, through consistency, trust, and a willingness to listen.

As Mercer continues to grow, moments like these will remain essential. They ensure that growth doesn’t create distance, but instead brings more voices into the conversation. They reinforce that every driver has a place here, not just on the road, but at the table.

Because at the end of the day, progress isn’t just about moving freight forward. It’s about moving together.

And at Mercer, that journey is one we take side by side, with open roads and open conversations leading the way.
