The first stage in transporting precast concrete is moving it from the plant to the storage yard. At this point, the concrete must reach its full design strength before being handled. Stage 2: Yard to Truck

Permitting and Route Planning for Oversize Precast Loads

Precast components that exceed 80,000 pounds gross weight, 8.5 feet wide, 13.5 feet tall, or 53 feet long require state-issued oversize and overweight permits before they hit the road.

Permitting is handled state by state, since limits, allowable travel hours, and escort thresholds vary across jurisdictions. The U.S. Department of Transportation maintains a federal overview of size and weight rules, and state DOTs publish the specifics that govern each leg of a route.

Route transportation plans for precast freight require careful planning and have to account for:

  • State-specific permits: Each state has its own rules for oversized loads. The application process typically requires 24 to 72 hours of lead time, depending on the route and time of year.
  • Route planning: Precast transport routes have to factor in low bridge clearances, posted bridge weight limits, and road conditions that change by state. In urban areas, delivery times may be restricted to certain hours, with curfews and rush-hour bans complicating logistics.
  • Escort vehicles: Loads that exceed certain dimensions require pilot cars or police escorts, which are often mandated by local authorities for safety.

Load Securement Best Practices for Precast Concrete

Federal cargo securement rules require precast to be tied down with chains rated for the piece, edge protectors at every contact point, and dunnage placed under the load to distribute weight away from stress points. The securement plan should be set before the piece is ever placed on the trailer.

FMCSA cargo securement rules set the math every precast load has to meet. The aggregate working load limit of all tiedowns must equal at least one-half the weight of the cargo, and a minimum of one tiedown is required for every 10 feet of length, with no fewer than two on any piece.

A 30-foot, 40,000-pound wall panel, for example, needs at least four tiedowns with a combined WLL of 20,000 pounds or more.

  1. Confirm the piece is fully cured and signed off by Quality Control before loading.
  2. Identify and use the manufacturer’s marked lift points on every move.
  3. Place hardwood dunnage under the piece to keep concrete off the deck and balance weight across cross-members.
  4. Use chains and binders with a working load limit (WLL) that meets or exceeds the piece’s weight
  5. Add edge protectors at every spot a chain or strap touches a concrete corner.
  6. Re-inspect securement within the first 50 miles, then at every stop or 150 miles after.
  7. Tarp only when weather conditions demand it, since careless tarping abrades exposed surfaces.

Coordinating Job Site Delivery

Job site delivery succeeds when crane availability, off-loading sequence, and site access are coordinated before the truck rolls. A precast piece that arrives without a crane staged or a clear path in creates demurrage charges, missed install windows, and avoidable risk to the load.

Confirm the following before dispatch to keep construction projects on schedule:

  • Crane size, reach, and rigging plan match the heaviest piece on the trailer
  • Off-loading sequence matches install order, with last-on, first-off when possible
